EAS369   Contemporary Issues in East Asia   (20 credits)

Description

This module provides an opportunity for students to study dynamic and contemporary East Asian issues, providing them with an up-to-the-minute understanding as well as a more nuanced theoretical understanding. The region of focus is Japan, but its contemporary issues are analysed in relation to China and South Korea among others. Possible topics include the legacy of Japanese imperialism in East Asia, regional economic integration and political rivalry, the model of East Asian capitalism, poverty and inequality in the region, and women's working conditions and fertility rates. Students will be assessed by a presentation and a formal exam.
